Roy Campbell and Issac Rousseau met in 1918 when both were at Oxford. Campbell was then trying to be accepted as a student, but since he could not learn Greek, a requirement for admission, he was unsuccessful. Rousseau became Professor of History at Rhodes University in South Africa.

It first appeared in Adamastor (Faber & Faber; London:1930). This edition was issued in recognition of Roy Campbell's birth on 2 October 1901.
